I believe the progressive concept album is the ultimate musical experience. Some fans want heavier, some softer, some neutral- The concept album has the ability to satisfy all those wants, while simultaneously taking the listener on an almost literal journey(in music and theme) - it can give all the highs/lows, heavy/melodic and give you a real musical experience. I don't want anything that appeals to mainstream listeners(they'll always have their cheap pop- why should DT stoop to that level?)- No- I want DT to keep pushing into new musical territory and continue pioneering the style they've mastered.
P.S. The rap idea in "dark eternal night" just doesn't work- Not only is it not their world, but it's almost contrary to what DT stands for. The whole idea confines the music too much and doesn't let it develop as it could- besides, rap isn't music- it's rhythm and lyrics but not music- if I want to hear rhythm I'll listen to one of Mike Portnoy's amazing drum solos.
