San Diego US Tour Kick-off - Another "10" on a scale of 1-10...
Dream Theater fans, you are in for a great show! The opening bands Into Eternity and Redemption both did a nice entertaining the audience before DT took the stage, which was right on time. Redemption especially shows maturity as a band and has excellent stage presence. If you are a big Dream Theater fan, should enjoy Redemption. Both opening bands were clearly very grateful to have the opportunity to tour with Dream Theater and thanked the band profusely.
Although this tour is shorter in terms of Dream Theater total stage time compared to concerts past, the band packed in a tremendous amount of music. James LaBrie’s voice was in great form and he had high energy. Jordan Rudess threw in some nice improvisational elements between various songs and was clearly having a lot of fun playing this set. John Myung’s bass sounded fantastic in this open air theater and the mix was very good. There did appear to be very minor technical difficulties early on (most not noticeable by the average listener) and the crew recovered nicely. John Petrucci was phenomenal. His blistering leads were clean and simply amazing. His slower more melodic passages were soulful and heartfelt. Mike Portnoy was also in top form. His clear drum kit was thundering and visually stunning. The light show, audio crew, and the entire experience was what you would come to expect from Dream Theater – near perfect.
Set List (NOTE: DT Changes the set list every night, so each show is unique!) DT opened with Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001 Space Odyssey Constant Motion. The crowd loved it as an opener Take The Time Blind Faith Surrounded I Walk Beside You The Dark Eternal Night The Spirit Carries On Endless Sacrifice In The Presence of Enemies (Both Parts)
Encore Medley- Trial of Tears (about first 4 minutes) - Finally Free, starting at the 4:01 mark of the song - Learning to Live right at the piano solo towards the end of the song - In The Name of God. - Octavarium Razor's Edge
For me, the best moments of the show were hearing "In the Presence of Enemies I and II" in the entirety, as well as the encore, which was the first part of Trail of Tears and then a nice Dream Theater medley.
I met several band members at the "after show" and got some autographs (James and Jordan) on my guitar. It's super late but wanted to post this for you die-hard fans who've been waiting. I'll clean up spelling, song titles, etc., later.
Many of the shows have already sold out, so if you live in/near a city that still has tickets available, buy them now!
