We were at the Rosemont Theater show last night and had Gold VIP Packages at ($150 each). First time for either of us to see Dream Theater, but we both consider ourselves to be big fans (me for 12 years and my wife for 2 years). No meeting the band but the gold tickets put us in good upholstered seats, on the aisle, about 6 rows back, directly in front of Petrucci. Platinum members were placed in front of the regular seating in folding chairs (that's gotta suck for $300 each).
Sound quality was so poor (no bass + heavy distortion) for the opening band that I had serious doubts if I was going to be able to stay and listen to Dream Theater if the sound quality did not improve. I would like to have believed the band was fairly talented for an opening band - but the sound was like tooth pain to me, and nothing more. If this band wants to go anywhere, they had better get their act together (in getting good sound techs / equipment) to present their music to the audience.
Sound quality for Redemption, the second band, was only slightly better than for the first. Just enough to tell the band had definite talent, but not good enough sound quality to hear all the instruments and be enjoyable. Like the first band, if Redemption wants to go anywhere, they had better get their act together (in getting good sound techs / equipment) to present their music to the audience.
Dream Theater started out with much better but still somewhat poor sound quality in the beginning of the first song - but their sound techs improved it very quickly and the music became enjoyable. By the end of the second song, sound quality was excellent (although not absolutely the best I have heard) and remained so the rest of the concert.
In the end we were quite happy with DTs performance and our decision to attend this concert. However, I feel the experience would have been much better without the first two bands.
