Day 3 - Chapter 4 (June 25, 2007)
It's day 4 of my week-long quest to go through every exercise in John Petrruci's Wild Stringdom. I have given myself 7 days to go through all eight chapters. This chapter is all about stepping out of the box - meaning, playing the same old jam riffs in a plain old pentatonic scale. John encourages and shows the learner how to expand the "vocabulary" and come up with interesting new sounds that help each musician build his/her own style. There is also great theory here to help us tab guys really understand music. Here are some of my observations of the examples in this chapter...
What a challenge! This is by far the most demanding chapter so far. All of the exercises are full of theory, lots of unfamiliar new patters, and more. I found myself improvising between exercises - partly because I wanted to return to something familiar and partly because I wanted to experiment with new ideas I picked up.
Rather than describe each exercise (there are plenty), all I can say is that I'll have to review this chapter many times to really get the full impact and benefit of this chapter. I could easily spend one week studying this chatper and experimenting with new techniques.
